Invisible setting, a style made popular by the venerable jewelers Van Cleef & Arpels, was a look once reserved only for royalty and the very wealthy until Chris Slowinski of Christopher Designs was awarded three United States patents.  Two of these are technological patents. As a young jeweler's apprentice in Europe, Christopher Slowinski was always enamored with the almost magical beauty of invisible set diamonds, and set out to improve this style of setting.  After years of search and drawing on his background as a master jeweler and skilled lapidary, Christopher Slowinski developed a new technique for creating invisible set jewelry.  This technique is so innovative, an U.S. patent protects it.  In fact, in the entire world there are only two jewelers to ever be issued a patent for invisible set jewelry, Van Cleef & Arpels and Christopher Designs. 

As with all truly fine jewelry, LaserCut invisible set jewelry begins as an artist sketch.  The concept is further refined to create a final drawing from which a model is made.  Once the model is created and the diamonds selected, the jewelry is manufactured.  First the gold work is created to extremely accurate and close tolerance, using both traditional hand craftsmanship and state-of-the-art computer machining technology.  Next, each diamond, which was pre sized to its exact location, is set by a diamond setter between two or more bars of gold in the mounting.  As the diamond is pressed down, the notches bite into the gold.  The angle of the notch prevents the stone from moving up or coming loose, "Much the way a fishhook works", explains Christopher.

"A well designed piece of jewelry should invite closer inspection," said David Wysor. "That illustrates what happens to me when I see something I think is well-designed – I do a double take." Wysor's studio is littered with the things that have made him do double takes. Tacked on one bulletin board is a close-up photo of the wheel on a steel rolling cart; a magazine layout of wingtip golf shoes with contrast stitching; and a photo, torn from a newspaper, of a blocky low-rise in Jericho. All of this, however subtly, plays some role in the design of Wysor’s bracelets, earrings and necklaces.

Wysor derives creative inspiration from his adopted hometown. "Walking around a place like Philadelphia that is so visually stimulating makes your mind active." The art deco detailing from one 1930s skyscraper a few blocks from his studio inspired one of his collection’s gold accents.

Wysor came to jewelry largely by chance. Living in New Orleans, he met a jeweler with a studio in the French Quarter, who was having trouble meeting the demand for his handforged sterling silver jewelry. Wysor offered to help. "As soon as I sat down at the jewelers bench," he says, "I knew this was what I was going to do." He drank in everything he could about jewelry-making. He read books. He attended workshops. He walked into shops to inspect other designers’ pieces, to turn them over in his hands to see how they were finished.

After moving to Philadelphia to start his own business, he continued to soak up technical know-how from picking up contract work. His own style matured in the early 90’s, when he designed what is still his signature bracelet. The design is organic, the shapes reminiscent of bones, joints and knuckles, and when you look at it closely, you can see that the overall design is asymmetrical yet balanced.

Some pieces in his collection, like his signature bracelet, are about balance; some are about texture; and some are about pattern. One thing they all have in common is their versatility. "There are shapes and forms that speak to us universally, and putting them together is where designers come in - realizing the response those shapes, patterns, lines and textures elicit, then putting them together in a way that makes people want to use them."
